—¿Sabías que los corales no son plantas, sino animales? —preguntó Sergio mientras miraba el acuario con atención.

“Did you know that corals are not plants, but animals?” Sergio asked as he watched the aquarium intently.

—¡Sí! Aunque parecen piedras, son organismos vivos —respondió Marta, sonriendo.

“Yes! Even though they look like rocks, they are living organisms,” Marta replied, smiling.

—Tienen dos formas principales de reproducción —explicó Marta—.

“They have two main forms of reproduction,” Marta explained.

Pueden hacerlo asexualmente, mediante gemación, donde un nuevo pólipo brota del cuerpo del otro, o sexualmente, liberando gametos al agua.

They can reproduce asexually, through budding, where a new polyp sprouts from the body of another, or sexually, by releasing gametes into the water.

Este fenómeno es conocido como "desove sincronizado", y ocurre solo unas pocas veces al año.

This phenomenon is known as "synchronized spawning," and it happens only a few times a year.

—¿Y cómo logran los corales sobrevivir bajo el agua? —preguntó Sergio, intrigado.

“And how do corals manage to survive underwater?” Sergio asked, intrigued.

—Aquí es donde entran las zooxantelas, que son algas microscópicas —dijo Marta—.

“This is where zooxanthellae come in, which are microscopic algae,” said Marta.

Estas algas viven en el tejido del coral y llevan a cabo la fotosíntesis, proporcionando nutrientes al coral.

These algae live in the coral tissue and perform photosynthesis, providing nutrients to the coral.

A cambio, el coral les ofrece un lugar seguro para vivir.
